Welcome! My name is Lew White. All of my great-grandparents were from the Azores islands: fifteen from Sao Miguel and the sixteenth from Pico. My first career was in high-tech; in those days I was not particularly interested in history.
During my career in engineering I often wanted to write but never seemed to find the time. Most of that career was based on finding and implementing simple solutions to complex problems, so in my semi-retirement years I began writing what I called a "practice book": Texas Hold'em Proverbs, a simple approach to competitive play based on proverbs (memorable basic truths for common situations) and a "read a little, play a little" approach. It was fun to write and I hope fun to read.
My second book, Sopas, was something I felt compelled to write, partially because my heritage uniquely positioned to write it, and later because of some important historical trends that didn't seem widely known — certainly not by me before I began researching this book. My discussions with other people, and informal study of history, started me down a path that led to an article in Spritsail... and to some other things now in progress.
Stay tuned . . .
